There are some things I think every girl should carry around all the time, macaroons. If we’re going to get made fun of for carrying around giant purses, we might as well make good use of them, right? Here are a few of my recommendations & essentials.
PNY Micro Swivel Flash Drive- It’s super tiny. It comes in fun colors (mine is purple, of course). It holds 4GB & costs less than $20. I love it for moving stuff between computers, storing secrets & espionage. It’s also good for mundane things like sharing photos & it can probably be useful for work-related things.
Emergency Beauty Kit- I recently added Listerine strips, a mini nail file & band-aids to my standard kit. How I have gone so long without these items in my kit baffles me.
Flip Video Camera- My BlackBerry has essentially become my point & shoot, but I’ve been using a Flip for video for almost 4 years & love it! It’s unbelievably simple to use & compact enough to keep in your purse. Another stealthy spy gadget, you can capture all breeds of shenanigans & debauchery on this thing. I just customized & ordered the new version! This is my third Flip, macaroons. You will adore yours.
Moleskine Weekly Notebook-I am crippled without this, macaroons. On the left side, it shows you the whole week & the right ride is lined for notes, ideas, doodles & reminders. This is where I plan my blog updates, keep work appointments, take notes at meetings, brainstorm ideas & track deadlines for my many writing projects & of course add in all the fun stuff so I can see everything I have to look forward to! Who says it’s Stone Age to have a written planner? The battery never dies, it never freezes & data can never accidentally erase itself. Win!
Moleskine CityBook- I got my planner at the MoMA during the Tim Burton Retrospective so it combines a planner with my CityBook. On its own, CityBooks are full of maps & blank spaces to fill in with your adventures. It’s your private guidebook to your city. I mark down my favorite places or things to try (or avoid!).
Swiss Army Tool- I have my Dad’s old Swiss Army knife & I can’t tell you how many times it’s randomly come in handy. You will be surprised by the kinds of situations that call for a screwdriver & a can opener. You don’t need a crazy one that makes cookies & comes with a vacuum attachment or anything. I recommend the $30 Camper which holds, among other things, a corkscrew, toothpick & reamer with sewing eye. There’s also a credit card style tool you can slip into your wallet.
What tools do you recommend, macaroons? What can’t you live without?

I carry a “Rite in the Rain” writing pad – I do a lot of nature-writing and hikes, and the paper is water resistant. It’d be good for the city too, though, because if it’s raining or you spill a drink on it, the moisture just rolls off and you don’t loose your data.
The other things I always have with me are an eyebrow pencil, a solid or rollerball version of my perfume (nothing makes me happier than smelling good all of the time), and a little tube of Barielle nail strengthener cream…it is AMAZING (Really, really works! you rub it on your nails like you’d apply lotion), and I put it on whenever I’m sitting somewhere and waiting for something – so on the bus/subway, waiting rooms, etc. Gives me something to do and makes my nails unbreakable.

I’ve been super itching for a Flip, myself! Especially since moving back to New Orleans…

They’re worth every penny & you can customize the design to make yours totally unique. I can’t imagine the amazing things you’d capture in New Orleans. I was born there, but haven’t been back since I was very little.
Hi! I love your comments on the Moleskine Weekly Planner. It’s so true that it wins over digital devices. I converted to a physical planner as my phone once flushed out all the data and all my plans are gone. Moleskine’s weekly planner is truly a beauty for those who are not having a whole page of activity in a day but wish to scribbled few items happened in that week!
WEll, but I’m now torn between this planner or getting an organizer, e.g. Filofax… :(
