Rest well, Miss Murphy

Over the weekend, we lost a whole lot of talent & one of my biggest inspirations, macaroons. Brittany Murphy was effortlessly beautiful while keeping her face out of the tabloids, for the most part. She had that unique kind of beauty that turns heads simply because you’ve never seen features like that before. I respected her for her weight struggles & ability to thrive in a series of hugely diverse roles. I especially appreciated her later status as a cult film star. Her personal style always seemed fashionable without sacrificing comfort. She was at ease in anything & despite her often nervously awkward film characters, she maintained a seriously graceful presence off-set.

I wish she could have done more cult films.

My personal style has always emulated Brittany Murphy’s, intentionally or not: a little tomboyish early on which transformed into glunge (before we had a word for it) & then in contrast, the chic starlet. She could wear anything & still always look comfortable with herself. Let’s celebrate her life through styles she inspired.

Homegirl could work a pair of heels like no other, giving hope to all of us awkward chicks in sneakers. I always loved the way her hair always looked tousled & careless like she’d been headbanging all night. Also, can we talk about how effing amazing that necklace is? Why is that not under my Christmas tree?

Girl, Interrupted is a terrific film- one of my favorites, macaroons. Brittany Murphy played Daisy, an incest victim with an eating disorder. This outfit finds its inspiration in Daisy’s final costume- a bathrobe & slippers- and makes it appropriate for the world off the big screen.

Murphy kept her looks simple & elegant when the occasion called for glamour. Had I been her lucky stylist, I might have sent her down a red carpet in something like this, post-Girl, Interrupted/ pre-Uptown Girls.

This might be something she’d have worn to a premiere after Uptown Girls. Her style grew up a lot then as she took on a character in Sin City & started singing. She sang beautifully.

"On a night like this everybody's looking for somebody stranger."

It’s really not often I care enough about a celebrity to miss them, macaroons, but I will miss Brittany Murphy like I miss Heath Ledger. There will be a lot of films in the future that could have benefited from her talents, gifts & grace, but I will continue to remember her in my personal style.
