I did a lot this week, macaroons, but I’ve been too busy & distracted to remember any of it! Seriously. The other night I showered & intended to prepare for bed by taking out my contacts, but instead I snapped out of a trance & realized I was putting on eyeliner. I feel like an alien.

You’ve heard a lot about my new bike in the past couple of weeks, macaroons. I decided I didn’t ever want to wait for a guy to put me on the back of his bike & now, I’ll never get on the back again! If you’re curious about tripling your badass & hotness factors as well as your independence, go for it! Here’s my experience.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Course. It all started here last July. Look here for a course in your state. I was nervous. I’d never actually driven a motorcycle before. There were people in the class from all levels, ages & skill sets. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep up. The instructors started us off so slowly, however, before long I was itching to get to the next level. The course builds confidence & teaches you all the basic skills you’ll need at a pace that you decide. On the last day of the 3 day course, you take a written & riding test which (if you pass) allows you to get your license!

Basic Rider Training Class

A lot of my friends bought bikes right away. I started a job to get myself into a stable financial position. After a year of letting student loans kick in & readjusting my budget to accommodate them, I started researching. I knew I wanted a cruiser style, not a crotch rocket. As an inexperienced rider, I also knew I didn’t need a bike with massive power. A Honda Rebel 250 is a perfect fit.

I was going to buy a used one at a killer deal, but my seller backed out at the last second. Scouring Craigslist for a bike, I realized there were Rebels almost as old as I am for $3000. I’d also have to pay in cash. A brand new Rebel is roughly $4000 & I can finance it (therefore not draining my savings AT ALL!) Light bulb! Why buy a used bike when I can get a brand new one for $1000 more & finance it for less than $100/month?

I went to a dealer, sat on my Honda Rebel & it felt perfect, but I needed time to think about it. I did, however, turn in my credit application to get approved, if I decided to move forward. Then, I researched insurance through Rider & Progressive. Turns out, the whole year is only $168 for full coverage, plus some extras I wanted like Roadside Assistance. Bonus- I got a discount for taking the MSF Course!

With that, I went back to the dealer the next day & signed all the paperwork! Hello, first major purchase of my adult life!

A note on being a chick at a dealership: If you feel like you’re being pressured, talked down to or otherwise not valued as a potential buyer, leave. Go elsewhere. The gentleman at the dealership I went to was totally laid back. He answered all my serious questions without pressuring me or making me feel stupid (even though I’m sure some of my first time buyer questions were stupid). The last thing he asked me was what color I wanted.

When I picked it up, he took me out to it & went over every single part of the motorcycle. I could not have gone more smoothly. Go out & be a biker chick!

Someday, I will start a whole biker gang of macaroons!
